1976, 96 min., 35mm, color. Directed by Kinji Fukasaku. Written by Kazuo Kasahara. With Tetsuya Watari, Meiko Kaji, and Takuya Fujioka. Print courtesy of The Japan Foundation with permission from TOEI CO, LTD.

A renegade cop with a bad conscience falls for an imprisoned gang boss’s spirited, beautiful, part-Korean wife, testing his loyalties and derailing his career. Though nominally a “yakuza film,” director Kinji Fukusaku uses this effortlessly stylish parable to explore the consequences of identifying with outsiders in Japan. Nagisa Oshima’s memorable cameo as a police chief who oozes evil efficiency testifies to his great respect for his maverick contemporary, Fukusaku, widely credited with inspiring many of the younger directors included in this series.
