Wandering Home
2010, 118 min., 35 mm, in Japanese with English subtitles.
Directed by Yoichi Higashi. With Tadanobu Asano, Hiromi Nagasaku, Yoshiko Kayama, Masako Takada, Mikako Ichikawa.
A practical, uncomplaining meditation on the destructive nature of alcoholism and the despair that goes with it, resigned to the strange comedy of its plight and yet retaining grip and grace. Once a great wartime photographer, Yasuyuki now spends his days indulging in alcoholic binges, exhausting himself with a cycle of drunken violence and illness. His latest binge lands him in the hospital once more, bringing about the return of his caring ex-wife, Yuki, who divorced him due to the abuse she received from his drunken spells. A film driven by powerful performances and the pulse of life, even in its proximity to death.
