2004, 119 min., 35mm, color. Written and directed by Kaneto Shindo. With Shinobu Otake and Ayumi Ito. Print courtesy of The Japan Foundation with permission from Kindai Eiga Kyokai Co., Ltd. U.S. premiere.

This pitch black comedy offers a scathing satire of pervasive social corruption. A mother and daughter, the starving survivors of a pioneer village, live trapped in an isolated house. One by one, they seduce men who venture near their home. Critically acclaimed actress Shinobu Ohtake plays Yumie, the venomous mother who will do anything to survive, effortlessly blending allure and indignation. She and her not-necessarily-blind daughter dispatch their victims and deliver satirical barbs with equal delight.

Tickets: $10/$6 Japan Society members, seniors & students.
