Since early modernism, architects in Japan have been affected by the “West,” and yet most have sought to define their own version of modernity. In today’s increasingly globalized world, where the relative significance of national identity is in question, the newest generation of Japanese architects must develop strategies that address global issues and opportunities while finding answers to questions unique to each locality. This program, co-organized by Japan Society and the College of Architecture, Art and Planning at Cornell University, examines the nuances, intricacies and innovations in contemporary Japanese architecture that are also influenced by local, political, economic and social realities.
Followed by a reception.
Tickets: $15 for both sessions, $12 members, $10, seniors & students; $10 for one session, $8, members, $5 seniors & students. Cornell students/alumni/faculties are eligible for the member discount.
