Shodo Workshop for Beginners

This in-person workshop is structured for beginners wishing to try the art of Japanese calligraphy. Students will learn how to use a brush and the brush strokes in basic kanji. Japanese language skills are not required. Supplies will be provided.

Instructor:

Megumi Barringer 雅号:修佳 (Shuka) is a licensed Japanese calligrapher since 1997 by Nihon Sogo Shogeiin in Japan, has been teaching calligraphy for over 20 years in Kamakura, Japan and in Princeton, New Jersey. She teaches at Princeton Community Japanese Language School, Princeton University, and at her own private studio in Princeton. Her work (seal carving, kanji, kana) was selected for the Mainichi Calligraphy Exhibition. She presents her work every August at a calligraphy exhibition held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.

Tuition: $40 nonmembers /$35 Japan Society Individual and Corporate members

About In-Person Workshops

All registrants of in-person workshops and events must be fully vaccinated, with at least 14 days having passed since their final dose prior to the day of the workshop. Additionally, proof of a booster is required for all those who are eligible to receive it, with a four-week grace period upon becoming eligible. Students will be required to show proof of vaccination and ID on the day of the workshop or event.

All students and instructors must wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth at all times.

Japan Society reserves the right to cancel any course or workshop due to unforeseen circumstances, including but not limited to insufficient enrollment. Enrolled students will be refunded 100% of the tuition paid without incurring a service charge.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations are accepted until 12 pm ET, the business day before a course or workshop begins. With a cancellation, a refund of tuition minus a service charge ($20 for courses, $5 for workshops) will be provided. After this deadline, cancellations are not accepted.

Cancellations are accepted by phone only. We do not accept email cancellations.

Japan Society also reserves the right to cancel any course or workshop if sufficient enrollment is not obtained. In such cases, students already enrolled will receive full refunds (no service charge).
