Workshop

Saturday, May 17 at 1 pm

Become acquainted with traditional tablature-style shakuhachi notation and learn the range, limits and techniques of the shakuhachi in this 90-minute crash course designed especially for composers. The Shakuhachi 5 will also perform a selection of new music from composer submissions for solo shakuhachi, discussing each piece and how to incorporate techniques and sounds unique to the shakuhachi instrument.

CALL FOR SCORES! All interested composers are welcome to submit solo shakuhachi scores up to three minutes in length for consideration, to be played live by The Shakuhachi 5 members during the Shakuhachi Workshop for Composers event. All compositions are welcome regardless of familiarity with the instrument, and can be submitted on Western staff notation. For preliminary information on the shakuhachi, Minoru Miki’s “Composing for Japanese Instruments” (University Rochester Press, 2008) is suggested reading. For further questions, or to submit scores, contact Program Officer Padraic Costello at [email protected].
