Not Held at Japan Society – Grand Opening of Giant Robot New Store in New York
Saturday, June 25
Reception from 6 – 10 pm featuring the artwork of Eishi Takaoka
Giant Robot is proud to announce the grand opening of its newest store, Giant Robot New York. Located in the East Village, GRNY will provide its customers with unique goods and art exhibitions that blur the lines between high art and lowbrow; modern design and old world craftsmanship. After much
anticipation, GRNY will bring Giant Robot’s keen eye for trend setting culture to New York.
The grand opening will showcase art by Japanese sculptor Eishi Takaoka. Takaoka was featured in Giant Robot issue 33 and later had his first exhibition at GR2 in LA. Since then, his cryptic carved heads mounted on tiny medicine bottles have become highly sought after. Takaoka’s sculpture appears on the cover of Haruki Murakami’s most recent best-seller, Kafka on the Shore.
Giant Robot built its name starting with a xeroxed zine in 1994 and has since evolved into an internationally recognized quarterly magazine and publishing house. The first Giant Robot Store opened its doors in Los Angeles in 2001. In 2003, Giant Robot opened GR2, a hybrid store/gallery featuring emerging artists such as David Choe, Kozyndan, and Souther Salazar. Later that year GRSF opened in San Francisco’s Upper Haight district. In 2005, a fourth store was opened in Los Angeles’ popular Silverlake neighborhood. A restaurant, gr/eats, is the latest addition to the Giant Robot lifestyle experience.
