Monday Play Reading Series: The Face of Jizo (Chichi to kuraseba) & Fireflies (Kami wo kakiageru)

In a new initiative to introduce the canon of contemporary Japanese plays to audiences outside of Japan, these inaugural readings for the new annual Play Reading series feature the most prominent contemporary Japanese plays staged in English translation by emerging and established American directors and actors.

This delicate play, written by renowned novelist and playwright Hisashi Inoue, portrays a father-daughter relationship and the complex pursuit of happiness after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

This reading is developed with the Lark Theatre Company.

Fireflies (Kami wo kakiageru)

The recipient of the prestigious Kunio Kishida Drama Award, this poignant drama written by the young Kyoto-based Toshiro Suzue follows several characters on a lonely search for connection and compassion in contemporary Japanese society.
