A Free Online Course for High School Children of Frontline Workers

Mondays, June 1 – August 3
4–5:30 PM EDT (10 Lessons)

This course will be conducted online via Zoom. To participate fully, you will need access to a device with internet, microphone, and camera (such as a laptop, smartphone, or tablet).  Further instructions will be provided on Friday, May 29. Please note that all times listed are New York time (ET/UTC-04:00).

Japan Society’s Language Center is offering a FREE ten lesson language course structured for high school children of frontline workers, ages 15 and above. These students should be children of parents who are working in law enforcement and public safety, health care and emergency services, transportation, or similar essential work during the COVID-19 pandemic. We extend our gratitude and support for these civic heroes!

Course Information: Structured for fans of Japanese animation, this course will use various popular anime as a medium to introduce students to basic vocabulary, elementary conversation, and simple sentence structures. This semester will focus on the popular anime, My Hero Academia. No prior Japanese language experience is required.

Registration Information: To register, please email us at [email protected] with the following information:

1. Student name (first and last)
2. Student’s age and grade (completed by June 2020)
3. School name, location, and from whom or where you received this information (please be specific)
4. Parent name (first and last) and occupation
5. Email address: this will be how we communicate course information, including the Zoom link
6. Phone number: only used as a secondary means of contact for your registration

Note: A confirmation of registration will be acknowledged by email. Acceptance is first come, first served, and class size is limited. Japan Society also reserves the right to cancel any course if sufficient enrollment is not obtained. If this is the case, we will notify students by the afternoon of Friday, May 29, 2020.

All students should be available for the full course duration. If you need to withdraw after your registration is confirmed, please let us know. There may be other students wishing to take your place in the class.

Instructor: Ms. Yuko Aizawa has taught at the Sendagaya Japanese Institute in Tokyo, Japan and at the Royal Hawaiian Academy in the United States. She has been an instructor at the Language Center since 1994.
