Teacher Professional Development Talk: Contemporary U.S.-Japan Relationship

Join us for an online discussion on contemporary Japan with particular focus on the U.S.-Japan relationship, featuring a leading expert from Japan, Dr. Kazuto Suzuki. This PD session will provide educators with a deep and insightful exploration of the evolving U.S.-Japan relationship, delving into the countries’ intertwined histories from postwar to the present. Participants will also engage in a forward-looking analysis of how Japan’s new prime minister and the upcoming U.S. presidential elections may shape the future of this vital partnership. Participants will discuss and exchange teaching ideas in smaller groups after the talk.  

Participating educators will receive resource books on the U.S.-Japan relationship and Japanese American History.

Speaker:

Dr. Kazuto Suzuki, Professor, Graduate School of Public Policy, University of Tokyo

Dr. Kazuto Suzuki is Professor of Science and Technology Policy at the Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of Tokyo and Senior Fellow of the Asia Pacific Initiative (API), an independent policy think tank. He worked at the Fondation pour la recherche stratégique in Paris as assistant researcher and as Associate Professor at the University of Tsukuba from 2000 to 2008 and served as Professor of International Politics at Hokkaido University until 2020. He served as an expert on the Panel of Experts for the Iranian Sanctions Committee of the United Nations Security Council from 2013 to July 2015.
