From the vantage point of a privileged and alienated "outsider" (gaijin), Hideo Levy‘s book, A Room Where the Star-Spangled Banner Cannot Be Heard (Columbia University Press, July 2011), which echoes events in his own life, beautifully captures a heady, eventful moment in Japanese history. It also richly renders the universal struggle to grasp the full contours of one’s identity. In this program, Levy will discuss his own experience as a gaijin in Japan and how he became the first American novelist to write in Japanese.

Followed by a book signing and reception.
