Akiko Yano: Voice & Piano
Friday, February 8 & Saturday, February 9
7:30 pm
"Akiko Yano is a world class songwriter with a clear, gentle, wide-ranging voice. She is also an accomplished, endearing performer who might be a Japanese Carole King, Joni Mitchell or Meredith Monk."
— Jon Pareles, The New York Times
Thousands of fans in Japan watched Akiko Yano’s career blossom from child piano prodigy to sensational darling-songstress when she released her 1976 hit debut album Japanese Girl, prompting critics to proclaim that a young genius has appeared. An exceptional artist who has been acclaimed as a serious composer, jazz pianist and pop singer, Yano was born in Tokyo. Though she continues to tour Japan, where she is a top star, her home is here in New York City, where she composes and records music in her own studio, and performs annually to sold-out houses at Joe’s Pub.
This concert at Japan Society features her extraordinary arrangements of Japanese folk and children’s songs as well as her own compositions that draw out the distinctive sounds of the Japanese language. She performs with her trio, Cliff Almond (percussion) and Chris Minh Doky (bass).
Tickets: $32/$30 Japan Society members. Purchase tickets online above or call the Box Office at (212) 715-1258.
