If Jane Austen had ever written an edo-period love story or Ozu Yasujiro directed a swordplay drama, it might have looked a little like After the Flowers, an exquisitely mounted second feature by Nakanishi Kenji in which all emotions are beneath social surfaces and swordplay is held back to only two life-changing fights.
