About the Organization

Japan Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening the bonds of friendship between the United States and Japan, promoting cultural exchange between the two countries, and fostering mutual understanding and cooperation between its people.

More specifically, Japan Society cultivates dynamic relationships between the people and business communities of the United States and Japan through our multidisciplinary programs. We sponsor more than one hundred events annually: exhibitions in our art gallery, a multi-faceted performing arts program, a respected film festival and many exciting movie screenings, speakers’ series, business and policy presentations, and education programs. We also have an onsite language center and rent our fully equipped facilities ideal for conferences, receptions, film screenings, workshops, and other special events. Our unique rental spaces include a 260-seat auditorium, a spacious reception room and foyer with views of a sculpture garden and waterfall, and an intimate meeting room and atrium situated on the Society’s second floor.

Japan Society is located in Japan House, our landmarked HQ near the United Nations.

About Our Culture

Our people are what make our organization such a special place to work and, building upon a strong organizational People philosophy based on integrity and ethics, we have put a great deal of thought and intention into creating a culture that supports our teammates, where everyone’s opinion is important, where every one’s voice is heard.

We promise a safe and healthy working environment where all staff members are treated with respect and dignity. We work together to ensure that our behavior aligns with our values. When issues do arise, we have protocols in place so that genuine grievances are dealt with promptly and fairly. We want each Japan Society staff member to be able to concentrate on the responsibilities of their role within the Japan Society community without external noise. We therefore offer the support of superb benefits, a flexible hybrid work model and a responsive, proactive, and engaged leadership team. For a summary of our benefits, please click here.

We set clear job expectations from the very start and offer each team member opportunity, encouragement, and assistance in managing their work/life balance and in setting boundaries within which to flourish professionally. We are constantly updating and adding to the programs, tools, and resources that we can provide to help our staff succeed. These initiatives, which are a part of daily work life, together with the constant reinforcement of our core values (determined by staff vote in 2024) of being innovative, collaborative, intentional and accountable, form a People-centric culture within Japan Society that will help each team member craft the career that they want with us.

Equal Opportunity Statement

We want all our staff members to have equal opportunities to thrive within Japan Society, regardless of age, disability, ethnic origin, nationality, religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, or family circumstances. We are proud of the diversity represented by our team members and celebrate the many differences of culture and opinion that serve to bring us together – fully engaged teams focused on one mission, moving the goals of Japan Society forward together.

We apply these same values to our recruitment process and actively seek to reduce unconscious bias during the application process, hiring only through the lens of our candidates’ unique skillsets and what they will add to our culture.

Reasonable Accommodation

Japan Society is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified candidates. We take pride in providing reasonable accommodation when requested by a qualified applicant with a disability, consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and New York State civil rights law. We recognize and celebrate the brilliance of neurodiverse brains and the competence and capabilities of those with physical disabilities.

If reasonable accommodation is needed for you to apply for a role or to complete the interview process, please contact our People department at [email protected], so that we can assist you with this.

Japan Society uses E-Verify to confirm the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires.
