The U.S. – Japan alliance is facing an increasing number of challenges early in the 21st century.  Japan has responded to many of these issues, including continued tensions on the Korean Peninsula and China’s extraordinary economic growth and increased defense investments, by demonstrating an increasingly proactive role in regional and global security.  Perceptions of American unilateralism in economic and military matters throughout Asia raise questions of America’s future ability to defend its economic and military interest in the region. The shifting economic and political landscape in Asia, restructuring of U.S. military assets worldwide, threats presented by international terrorism, and energy security are among matters that make close and harmonious relations between the U.S.-Japan more critical than ever.  U.S. Ambassador to Japan, J. Thomas Schieffer will highlight many of the issues affecting bilateral U.S. – Japan relations today and point out opportunities for closer collaboration in the coming years.
