From Taiko Drumming to J-Pop Music & Dance

A Six-Day Summer Immersion Workshop for High School Students
Workshop: Monday-Friday, August 18-22, 1-5 pm
Student Performance & Reception: Saturday, August 23, 12-4:30 pm (for students) / 2-4 pm (for guests)
 
Learn Japanese traditional and pop music and develop basic taiko drumming, vocal and choreographic (movement) skills under the guidance of professional taiko drummers, singers and dancers during this five-day workshop. Designed for music-loving teens, the workshop explores Japanese music genres such as enka (a type of ballad), kayokyoku (a Japanese pop music genre) and J-pop, in addition to examining Japan’s unique music industry and recent smash hits that are becoming increasingly popular overseas. The week culminates with a student performance and a reception for friends and family on Saturday, August 23. Open to students entering 9th-12th grade in fall 2014. No prior music or dance experience necessary.

Eligibility
● Participants must be high school students as of September 2014.
● Participants must attend all of the scheduled workshop sessions and the performance & reception (8/18-22, 1-5 pm and 8/23, 12-4:30 pm).
 
Application Form & Deadline
Please submit the general application form by Monday, June 30, 2014. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Space is limited and advanced registration is advised. Applications will be accepted after this date subject to space availability.

Tuition
$230/$200 Japan Society members. Need-based scholarships are available.
