East Asia on the Brink: What Japan Must Do to Assure Regional Stability

East Asia is at a historic crossroads, as arguments over collective self-defense in the Japanese Diet occur alongside unprecedented expansion of military assets in China. Combined with lingering tensions in the Korean Peninsula and various territorial conflicts in the South and East China seas, the region today is less stable than ever before. The Honorable Seiji Maehara, Former Minister for Foreign Affairs and Member of Japan’s House of Representatives, provides a keynote speech on how Japan should act, particularly with regard to China and the alliance with the U.S. Following the Keynote, Mr. Maehara will be joined by Xiaobo Lü of Barnard College and Sheila Smith of the Council on Foreign Relations, both security experts specializing in East Asia, discussing the geopolitics of the region today.
