Yukio Mishima Centennial Series: Emergences

Five-time Nobel prize-nominated author, playwright, poet, film director, bodybuilder, Shintoist, ultranationalist and the leader of an attempted coup d’etat that culminated with a gruesome public act of seppuku – the great post-war-era Japanese novelist Yukio Mishima was a deeply complex and divisive figure. Recognizing his immeasurable global influence, Japan Society honors Mishima 100 years after his birth with a series of world and North American premieres inspired by Mishima’s brilliant, controversial and era-defining writings, alongside classic works of Noh theater that served as an ancient muse for the artist.
