JAPAN CUTS’ main category showcases a broad selection of contemporary Japanese cinema across vibrant genres and styles. From deep dramas and tender coming-of-age tales to action, avant garde and even kaiju, our Feature Slate is a window to the past year of Japan’s cinematic storytelling.

JAPAN CUTS’ competitive slate offers six hand-picked independent narrative features by emerging directors.

The 2024 Classics Slate celebrates three canonical works of ’80s and ’90s independent cinema. Estival in nature, these films recall the faint memories of summer—reflections of sunlight, summer storms, matsuri and hanabi.

Engaging takes on the Japanese experience with powerful documentaries across compelling topics.

Vibrant short works from Japan that explore new directions in experimental, animated and narrative film.
