This satire of traditional Japanese values liberally spiked with genuine affection and razor-sharp wit, exposes a middle class family’s superficial pretensions as it struggles to hang on. The prodigal son’s inadvertent appearance at his grandfather’s funeral provokes a long-simmering sibling confrontation viewers will not soon forget. Miwa Nishikawa’s bold directorial debut features an edgy soundtrack and striking performances.
