Kore – this (around speaker)
これ

Sore – that (near the person you are speaking)
それ

Are – that over there (not near speaker or person being spoken too)
あれ

Kore wa ikura desu ka? – how much is this?
これはいくらですか

Kore wa nan desu ka? – what is this?
これはなんですか

Kore o kudasai – I’ll take this
これをください

Sore wa nan desu ka? – what is that?
それはなんですか

Sore o kudasai – I’ll take that
それをください

Are wa nan desu ka? – what is that (over there)?
あれはなんですか

Are o kudasai – I’ll take that (over there)
あれをください
