 漫画 マンガ Manga

Manga is an amazing story-telling medium as well as a great study tool.

First, what are some of the main elements of manga?

プロット (purotto):plot or storyline

キャラ / キャラクター (kyara / kyarakuta-):characters

セリフ (serifu):speech

フキダシ (fukidashi):speech bubbles

モノローグ (monoro-gu):monologue, what the character’s thinking

描き文字 (kaki moji):onomatopoeia and small texts outside speech bubbles

コマ割り (koma wari):separating the space into panels

ラフ (rafu):rough sketch

ネーム (ne-mu):blueprint of manga usually done in pencil.

ペン入れ (pen ire): inking

ベタ (beta):filling in

ホワイト (howaito):white ink for correction and highlights



Here are some major categories of manga based on the target audience.

児童漫画 (jidou manga):mainly for elementary school students

少年漫画 (shounen manga):mainly for elementary school to high school boys (e.g. Dragon Ball)

少女漫画 (shoujo manga):mainly for elementary school to high school girls (e.g. Sailor Moon)

青年漫画 (seinen manga):mainly for high school students and older

Here are main genres of manga

学園漫画 (gakuen manga):school

ギャグ漫画 (gyagu manga):comedy

推理漫画 (suiri manga):detective, e.g. Case Closed

スポーツ漫画 (supo-tsu manga):sports

恋愛漫画 (ren-ai manga):love stories

ファンタジー漫画 (fantaji- manga):fantasy

SF漫画 (esu efu manga):Sci-Fi

ホラー漫画 (hora- manga):horror

音楽漫画 (ongaku manga):music

料理漫画 (ryouri manga):cooking
