In today’s lesson we discuss how to introduce yourself in a variety of situations. Whether with your friends, coworkers, acquaintances, guests or superiors, you’ll be able to use these phrases, so try them out!

The primary levels of speech are:

Casual (friends, family)
Polite (colleagues, acquaintances, strangers)
Respectful (boss, guests, teachers, customers)

Using the incorrect politeness level is not the end of the world, but having the knowledge of which level to use and when to use it will help you out on your road to mastering Japanese!

We would like to hear from you! Please feel free to ask questions and comment on what you’d like to learn. We’ll be creating Q+A lessons in the future!

Thanks for watching! See you next time! では、また今度!Dewa, mata kondo!

初めまして (hajime mashite) — Nice to meet you (used only in introductions)

よろしく/よろしくお願いします/よろしくお願いいたします (yoroshiku/yoroshiku onegaishimasu/yoroshiku onegaiitashimasu) — The meaning of this expression varies depending on the situation and is one of the more difficult expressions to translate. Possible variations include: Let’s be friends/I look forward to getting to know you/I look forward to working with you, etc.

As we explained in the last episode, there are 3 levels of politeness in Japanese; Casual, Polite and Respectful. Today, I would like to show you how to introduce yourself using the 3 levels.

Are you ready? はい、では始めましょう。Hai, dewa hajime mashou!

First is the Casual level . You can use this when talking to friends.

A: 初めまして、赤井です。Hajimemashite, Akai desu. よろしく。Yoroshiku!

One more time, mou ichido.

Here is the Polite level. You can use this in most general situations. Therefore if not in a formal or business situation, this level would be polite enough to use with anyone.

A: 初めまして、赤井です。Hajimemashite , Akai desu. よろしくお願いします。Yoroshiku onegai shimasu .

One more time, mou ichido.

and finally, here is a Respectful level . You can use this in business and formal situations such as a meeting or a formal party. It is made more polite with a bow.

A : 初めまして、赤井と申します。Hajimemashite, Akai to moushimasu . どうぞよろしくお願いいたします。Douzo yoroshiku onegai itashimasu.

もう一度。Mou ichido.

A : Very good! Totemo ii desu! Please practice these introductions in a variety of situations! If there’s any questions, I’ll be happy to answer! 質問をお待ちしています。では、また今度。Shitsumon o omachi shite imasu! Dewa mata kondo!
