About the performance:

Stranded in Japan during WWII, a young Japanese-American woman was forced to serve as a radio broadcaster for a propaganda program controlled by the Japanese Imperial Army, and was subsequently tried for treason. Seventy years later, this historic incident is brought to life through a visually stunning whodunit, conceived, written and directed by internationally renowned visual artist Miwa Yanagi. Brimming with iconic imagery from her rich body of photographic work, Zero Hour tells the multi-layered story of a woman caught between two nations during the war. This presentation marks Yanagi’s North American debut as a theater artist. Performed in English and Japanese with English subtitles.

Instructor:

Masa Takahashi has an MA in Teaching Japanese as second language from Nagoya University of Foreign Studies. He has taught Japanese at Lilydale Heights Secondary School in Melbourne, Australia, as well as at Nagoya University of Foreign Studies, and has been a Japanese instructor at Middlebury College, VT since 2001.

Stories from the War
Marking the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII, Japan Society presents the Society-wide series Stories from the War. Encompassing theater performances, film screenings, lectures, panels and educational opportunities for young people, programming from January to August explores history and considers challenging issues that the U.S. and Japan faced surrounding WWII through a contemporary lens.

Stories from the War is supported by a generous grant from the Japan-United States Friendship Commission.
