1983, 104 min., 16mm, color. Directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi. Based on the novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui. With Tomoyo Harada, Ryoichi Takayanagi and Toshinori Omi. Print Courtesy of Kadokawa Herald Pictures, Inc.

Based on the acclaimed novel written by Yasutaka Tsutsui, The Little Girl Who Conquered Time has been repeatedly adapted into films and several TV series, and was newly released this summer in an animated version. After acquiring time-traveling powers from the mysterious scent of lavender, Kazuko struggles with the responsibilities of her new-found gift–saving her friends from collapsing rooftops and predicting earthquakes and fires–and falls in love with her childhood friend. Director Obayashi juxtaposes the nostalgic setting with surreal, sci-fi images and effects.
