This online, single-session professional development course, offered in collaboration with Facing History and Ourselves, prepares educators to teach the memoir Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D. Houston. As Wakatsuki shares her family’s experience of being uprooted from their home and placed in Manzanar internment camp, this memoir imparts to students a personal understanding of the discrimination endured by Japanese Americans during World War II. This course equips ELA, Social Studies and Humanities middle and high school teachers with new interdisciplinary teaching strategies that reinforce literacy skills and historical understanding. Teaching training workshop will be followed by a special guest speaker.
NY participants will receive CTLE hours and NJ participants can get PD hours upon completion.
