The fusion of Japan’s renowned technological expertise and flourishing cultural energy has generated some of the most advanced and desirable consumer products in the world.  Both highly contemporary and reminiscent of traditional aesthetics, Japanese design has taken the world by storm, commanding attention for its cutting-edge fashion, interiors, furniture and other products.  Deftly melding hip, cute and whimsical elements with a distinct “Japanese” flavor, designers have generated a colossal wave of Cool Ideas & Hot Products.

Tokyo-based design entrepreneur Teruo Kurosaki converses with leading designer Karim Rashid on “The Creation of Design.” Moderated by I.D. magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Julie Lasky.

This program is presented as a part of the Distinguished Lecturer Series, supported by the Yamanouchi USA Foundation.

Saturday, March 19
10 am-5:30 pm

A whole day of discussions exploring the newest in lifestyle products, fashion and interiors. Participants include humanoid robot designer Tatsuya Matsui; fashion designer Yoshiki Hishinuma; graphic designer Kenya Hara; furniture and interior designer Tsutomu Kurokawa; design historian Hiroshi Kashiwagi; architects Kumiko Inui and Toshiko Mori; industrial designer Masamichi Udagawa; Museum of Arts & Design Chief Curator David McFadden; Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum Textiles Curator Matilda McQuaid; and MoMA Architecture & Design Curator Paola Antonelli.

Sunday, March 20

New Design Japan Workshop

This event is held off-site at the Museum of Arts & Design, 40 West 53rd Street. Admission is free with full symposium admission but attendance is limited to 25 and registrations are required. A hands-on workshop for symposium participants featuring fashion and textile designer Yoshiki Hishinuma, who got his start working with fashion house legend Issey Miyake, and Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada, textile artist, scholar and author.  Participants will be introduced to a variety of innovative textile design processes, including heat cutting and shrinking.
