SOLD OUT Mansaku-no-Kai Kyogen Company
Three generations of the Nomura family come together onstage for three magical evenings when The Mansaku-no-Kai Kyogen Company, led by Mansaku Nomura, returns to Japan Society for a new season of engaging performances.
Kyogen is the joyful, comic cousin of noh theater. Through the use of stylized movement and dance, kyogen delightfully satirizes and embraces human imperfections. Additionally, kyogen gives the audience a glimpse into the sound, style and culture of medieval Japan.
The Mansaku-no-Kai Kyogen Company is known for their captivating interpretations of classical comic theater and for the distinguished performances of the Nomura family. Mansaku Nomura was named Living National Treasure by the government of Japan. His son, Mansai Nomura, is a celebrated actor, not only in kyogen but also in film and television. The performances also feature Mansaku’s four-year-old grandson, who will be making his debut in the family tradition by performing the role of the monkey in The Monkey-Skin Quiver.
The three-city tour of Mansaku-no-Kai Kyogen Company is produced by Japan Society and is supported by The Japan Foundation through the Performing Arts JAPAN program and the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan.
Ticket-holders for each performance will be granted free admission to the gallery exhibition Isamu Noguchi and Modern Japanese Ceramics during the evening’s performance.
