Shodo Workshop for Beginners

This in-person workshop is structured for beginners wishing to try the art of Japanese calligraphy. Students will learn how to use a brush and the brush strokes in basic kanji. Instructor

Megumi Barringer 雅号:修佳 (Calligraphy name Shuka Barringer) has a calligraphy instructor license from the Nihon Sogo Shogeiin of Public Interest Incorporated Association in Japan since 1997, and she has been teaching calligraphy in Kamakura, Japan and Princeton, New Jersey for over 20 years. She is a calligraphy instructor at Princeton Community Japanese Language School, Princeton University, and teaches calligraphy classes to children and adults in Princeton. She has been teaching Shodo at Japan Society since 2017. Her work (seal carving, kanji, kana) was selected for the Mainichi Calligraphy Exhibition. She presents her work every August at a calligraphy exhibition held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.

How to Register

Tuition: $40 nonmembers /$35 Japan Society Individual and Corporate members

About In-Person Workshops

Japan Society strongly encourages everyone entering the building to be up to date on COVID-19 vaccines, including any boosters for which they are eligible. In-person students do not need to provide proof of vaccination and booster.

As of April 10, 2023, masks, particularly respirator-style (KN95, N95, KF94, etc.), are strongly recommended but are no longer required. A mask can be provided at the Welcome Desk upon request.

Japan Society reserves the right to cancel any course or workshop due to unforeseen circumstances, including but not limited to insufficient enrollment. Enrolled students will be refunded 100% of the tuition paid without incurring a service charge.

Please register by 12pm noon on Friday, July 7, 2023. After this date, please email us to inquire as seats may no longer be available.

Please Note

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations are accepted until 12 pm ET, the business day before a workshop begins. With a cancellation, a refund of tuition minus a service charge ($20 for courses, $5 for workshops) will be provided. After this deadline, cancellations are not accepted.

Cancellations are accepted by phone only. We do not accept email cancellations.

Japan Society also reserves the right to cancel any course or workshop if sufficient enrollment is not obtained. In such cases, students already enrolled will receive full refunds (no service charge).

Students must be age 16 or older.
