2004, 125 min., 35mm, color. Written and directed by Hae-sung Seong. With Kyung-gu Sol, Miki Nakatani, and Tatsuya Fuji. Print courtesy of CJ Entertainment.

The hero of this lavish Korean production became a legend in Japan when he beat American wrestlers in a televised match in 1958. The nation cheered him towards victory, oblivious to his Korean ancestry, a heritage still then despised in Japan. Rikidozan single-handedly sparked a professional wrestling mania only after anti-Korean prejudice locked him out of a sumo career. Korean star Kyung-gu Sol takes the role of Rikidozan, leading a cast of Japanese actors.

Tickets: $10/$6 Japan Society members, seniors & students.
