Limited space available – first-come, first-served
Join fellow Japan Society members for an exclusive evening at Ronin Gallery, where you’ll meet master printmaker Hironobu and experience the art of Japanese woodblock printing firsthand. Try your hand at pulling your own print while viewing Numabe’s masterful rendition of Hokusai’s Great Wave alongside an original masterpiece.
This intimate workshop offers a rare opportunity to engage with traditional Japanese artistry in one of NYC’s premier galleries specializing in Japanese prints.
From August 7th through 15th, Ronin Gallery and Globus Washitsu will host traditional woodblock printer Hironobu Numabe of Numabe Mokuhan in New York City as the 2025 Ronin | Globus Artisan in Residence. This initiative includes a one-week residency at Globus Washitsu and round-trip travel from Tokyo. During his stay, Numabe will lead a series of events including public demonstrations and workshops. Ronin Gallery is also collaborating with the printmaking studio to remaster Katsushika Hokusai’s iconic Under the Wave off Kanagawa (The Great Wave). In honor of this collaboration, Ronin Gallery will exhibit an original impression of Hokusai’s Great Wave alongside the newly remastered edition—on view in the gallery for one week only!
Hironobu Numabe
Founded by master printer Shinkichi Numabe, Numabe Mokuhan is acclaimed for “remastering” classic ukiyo-e prints—not merely reproducing them. Whether printing from original blocks or creating new ones, Shinkichi Numabe and his son Hironobu Numabe breathe new life into familiar designs with the highest printing quality.
