1975, 119 min., 35mm, color. Directed by Kazuo Kuroki. Written by Takehiro Nakajima. With Jun Eto, Keiko Takeshita, and Haruko Mabuchi. Print courtesy of Kawakita Memorial Institute with permission from Toho Co., Ltd.
Kazuo Kuroki’s bawdy, raucous coming-of-age film is a 1970s masterpiece. Tateo lives in a remote village on the typhoon-buffeted coast of Kochi, where he dreams of becoming a writer, but his nervous, doting mother, mostly absent father, and a motley crew of lusty, willful neighbors, continually stifle his ambitions. Gorgeously shot and suffused with a heedless, independent spirit, the film presages more recent narratives of youthful rebellion.
