A slender art house picture endlessly alert to the lives that hover on the fringes of our own, Parade scrapes against the sentimental in intimate scenes that are amazingly adroit in their negotiation of mood and competing solitude. In a crammed Tokyo apartment meant for newlyweds, four housemates orbit around each other’s lives–an aimless college student, a high-strung film industry employee (Tatsuya Fujiwara, Battle Royale, Death Note), a sleepaholic actress in a dead-end affair with a TV drama star and a spottily employed illustrator with a disturbing sense of humor. Along comes a golden-haired visitor, and things get very interesting. What sounds like a set-up for an American sitcom becomes the pretext for a striking and subtle existentialist drama with roots deeply planted in the despair of post-postmodern life, and with the edge of a dark-as-night crime thriller.
