Founded in 2000 and based in Osaka, the butoh-based all female troupe Sennichimae Blue Sky Dance Club uncovers new, original physical expression with a pop sensibility. Their choreography is born out of carefully observing elements from the physical memory of modern life and bringing them into new light. A Bowl of Summer (Natsu no Utsuwa) was inspired by the traditional summertime Japanese Obon festival that welcomes deceased ancestors back to the world and, after spending several days together, returns them to the afterlife. A Bowl of Summer explores the universe created when life and death mingle with each other in the summer.

This performance is a part of Turning Japanese, a city-wide celebration commemorating Japan Society’s Centennial.

Tickets: $20/$10 Performance Space 122 members
