I often wonder why I can’t easily get my tongue around the words ‘Western’ and ‘Eastern.’ (Yoko Tawada)

Yoko Tawada, the author of Where Europe Begins, will present and read her poems in Japanese and “Sprachpolizei und Spielpolyglotte” in German with English translation as well as address the question “Is Europe Western?” Where Europe Begins presents a collection of startling, innovative stories where the reader moves through landscapes of fairy tales, family history, childhood memories, strange words and letters, dramas, and everyday reality.


The event will be introduced by Dr. Kathrin DiPaola, Director of Deutsches Haus at NYU.
