Program Description
Managements of Japanese companies in the past were insulated from market discipline during the decades of long-term cross-shareholding relationships between historically related companies and their customers. These relationships have largely broken down, and activists are stepping into the vacuum to encourage managers to make much-needed changes to restructure their companies. This has not been uncontroversial—-with two of the most aggressive proponents of corporate change in Japan now under legal investigation. Hostile takeover bids are just beginning to appear, and M&A transactions were at a record level in 2006. Come and hear from two activists at the front line of change in Japan.

Reception to follow.
