Not Held at Japan Society – Bones in Pages, Saburo Teshigawara
Friday, July 21 at 8 pm
Saturday, July 22 at 8 pm
Location: Rose Theater, Broadway and 60th.
The work begins in darkness. As light gradually illuminates the stage, the mystery of Bones In Pages begins. Out of the darkness emerge a wall covered with open books, a dense black carpet of shoes, a table made of shards of glass. The air is charged as Saburo Teshigawara fuses sculpture with dance, air, space and time, redefining the parameters of space in an infinite series of movements. Fixed to the ground and rising from it with the sheer force of his mental energy, Teshigawara erupts into furious movement only to come to rest again. To mimic these powerful choreographic images, he mixes classical music and disharmonious sound. A cult figure in Japan, this prolific artist has achieved iconic status throughout Europe. Festival 2006 provides a rare opportunity to witness this “magician of movement” (The Times Literary Supplement) exhibit his rare gifts.
