This special event is in partnership with Toho International and Animation.

My Hero Academia is one of the most popular anime on the planet. Based on a manga by Kohei Horikoshi, it tells the story of Izuku Midoriya, a boy without powers who enrolls in a prestigious high school for superheroes in training. Acclaimed for its Japanese take on the American superhero genre, its positive themes of hope, duty and friendship, and its complex ensemble cast, the My Hero Academia story is told across over 40 volumes of manga and over 150 anime episodes, and Japan Society and Toho Animation are now proud to invite you to the New York Premiere of the newest My Hero Academia film where you can see My Hero Academia: You’re Next in a whole new light with an Immersive Light Stick Cheer Screening – the first of its kind outside of Japan!

At this special interactive event, often called a “cheer screening” in Japan, attendees are encouraged to laugh, applaud and cheer along with their favorite heroes, and all attendees at this special evening will receive an exclusive My Hero Academia: You’re Next light stick that automatically reacts to the film and is yours to keep as a souvenir from the event. Join your fellow MHA fans and cheer on your favorite heroes as a dazzling light show accompanies the on-screen action.

About My Hero Academia: You’re Next
“Next, it’s your turn!” Those were the words All Might, the Symbol of Peace and the world’s No. 1 hero, let out after using the last of his power to defeat All For One, the Symbol of Evil. Now, Deku and his Hero Course classmates at U.A. High School are determined to carry on his will as heroes, but Japan is soon devastated by an all-out battle when a mysterious man appears. He presents himself as the one to replace All Might, but despite resembling All Might in appearance, his ideals couldn’t be more different. Will Deku, Bakugo, Todoroki and the rest of U.A. High Class 1-A be able to protect the world by putting an end to Dark Might?

How Does It Work?
The My Hero Academia: You’re Next light stick is programmed to react to the film’s audio, automatically changing colors to match each moment. There’s nothing to configure, simply turn it on and enjoy the show.

Do I Get To Keep The Light Stick?
Yes, the light stick is yours to keep after the film and can be manually used like any other standard light stick or pen light.

What is a Cheer Screening?
In Japan, cheer screenings (or 応援上映 / ouen joei) are fan events that encourage audience participation often through cheering, singing, clapping and bringing other common concert items like light sticks into the theater. It’s an opportunity to connect with fellow fans while experiencing a movie in a concert-like setting.
