Manga for Teens: Shojo Manga Characters

Style Spotlight—Shojo Manga Characters
Mondays, July 7—28, 5:30-6:30 pm ET

This summer, dive into one of the most popular genres in Japan: shojo manga! Learn about its history as you master the skills needed to draw the characters from hit romance, fantasy, and coming-of-age manga and anime series like Fruits Basket and Sailor Moon—and to create your own character in a shojo style. Add an interesting new tool to your artistic toolbox by trying one of Japan’s iconic styles with this 4-session course.

About Manga for Teens: Our manga courses for teens offer budding artists the chance to explore the rich world of Japan’s most popular cultural export in a group of like-minded peers and with guidance from professional artists. Students will get to draw characters from their favorite series and try a variety of popular styles, all while developing the fundamentals necessary to create original characters and manga with their own unique artistic voices.

Both complete beginners and experienced artists are welcome to enroll.

About the Instructor

Hannah Nepomuceno
Hannah Nepomuceno is a comic artist from Queens with a lifelong love for manga. Experienced in both traditional and digital media, she posts most of her work online under the name “Speedy Sketch.” In addition to teaching manga at Japan Society, Hannah is also an instructor with the GIANT Room. Hannah received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in cartooning from the School of Visual Arts.

Tuition

$120/$100 Japan Society members. Open to middle and high school students. Space is limited; advanced registration required.

To register at the member price, the membership must be under the student’s name (Student Membership), or the student should be part of a Family Membership. To purchase or renew a membership, please visit the Membership page and pay online. Please register by Thursday, July 3, if possible. Seats may not be available after this date; please check the website for registration availability or contact the office.

Registrants will receive a Welcome Email and Zoom link from jseducation@japansociety.org on Thursday, July 3.

Additional Information

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations are accepted until 12 pm ET on the business day before the course begins. After this deadline, cancellations are not accepted and tuition is not refundable for any reason. Upon cancellation, the tuition paid minus a $20 service charge will be refunded. Cancellations are only accepted via phone.

Japan Society also reserves the right to cancel any course or workshop if sufficient enrollment is not obtained. In such cases, students already enrolled will receive full refunds (no service charge).

We do not record these classes, and recording of these classes is prohibited.

These courses will be conducted online via Zoom. To participate fully, you will need access to a device with internet, microphone, and camera (such as a laptop, smartphone, or tablet). Further instructions will be provided before each course begins. Please note that all times listed are New York time (ET).

• Pencils: Standard #2 or Mechanical with HB lead
• Ink pen: Sharpie Ultra-Fine Point Marker (Black)
• Eraser: Tombow Mono Eraser
• Sketchbook: Strathmore 400 Series Sketch Pad (50 sheets)
