2001, 116 min., 35mm, color. Directed by Shinji Somai. Based on a story by Akira Narumi. With Tadanobu Asano, Kyoko Koizumi, and Kumiko Aso. Print courtesy of CINE QUA NON. U.S. premiere.

This quiet, deeply affecting film was director Shinji Somai’s last work. Enigmatic international star Tadanobu Asano plays Sawaki, a pompous, privileged bureaucrat who has squandered his future. Pop singer Kyoko Koizumi made her acting debut as Lemon, a young mother whose husband’s death forces her to take work as an exotic hostess. When these wounded, mismatched souls meet, they embark on a journey that will redefine their damaged lives.
