Japan’s New Year’s Day Celebration: Oshogatsu

Celebrate Japan’s New Year’s holiday at Japan Society’s annual Oshogatsu event and join us for many traditional New Year’s activities. Families and children can watch live taiko drumming and accompanying lion dancing (shishi-mai), followed by a brief taiko session (taiko performances will begin at 2 pm and 3 pm.) Enjoy rice pounding (mochi-tsuki), calligraphy (kakizome), kite(tako)-making, a funny face game (fukuwarai) and top spinning (koma-mawashi). Recommended for all ages.

Tickets for festival and one (1) taiko drumming session (session I at 2 pm or session II at 3 pm): $15/$8 Japan Society members; children ages 2 or under free. Corporate and individual member families may purchase tickets at the discounted price.

Oshogatsu is a part of CelebrASIA NYC: New Year’s Festivities for Families, a series of programs offered by Japan Society, Museum of Chinese in America, The Korea Society, Asia Society, China Institute, Flushing Town Hall, and the Rubin Museum of Art introducing children to New Year’s traditions through food, performances, and hands-on workshops
