Japan’s New Year’s Day Celebration: Oshogatsu

Festival: 2-4 pm
Taiko drumming session I: 2 pm
Taiko drumming session II: 3 pm

Celebrate Japan’s New Year’s holiday with lion dancing (shishi-mai) accompanied by live taiko drumming, followed by a mini taiko work­shop! (Taiko demonstrations will begin at 2 pm and 3 pm.) There will be many traditional New Year’s activities for children, including rice pounding (mochi-tsuki), special New Year’s calligraphy (kakizome), kite-making/flying (takoage) and funny face game (fukuwarai). The festival is open 2-4 pm.

Recommended for all ages.

Tickets for festival and one (1) taiko drumming session (session I or session II): $15/$8 Japan Society members; children ages 2 or under free. Corporate and individual member families may purchase tickets at the discounted price.

Oshogatsu is a part of CelebrASIA NYC: New Year’s Festivities for Families, a series of programs offered by Japan Society, The Korea Society, Asia Society and Museum, China Institute in America and the Rubin Museum of Art introducing children to New Year’s traditions through hands-on workshops, performances and auspicious food.
