Join us for this exclusive conversation between veteran artist Keiji Uematsu and postwar Japanese art historian Reiko Tomii, recipient of the 2017 Robert Motherwell Book Award. In anticipation of Japan Society Gallery’s spring 2019 exhibition Radicalism in the Wilderness: Japanese Artists in the Global 1960s, Tomii will preview a few exhibition highlights while examining the innovations of Japanese artists who questioned conventions to expand the definition of global visual arts. Uematsu will discuss his experimental performative and photo-based works as well as his perspective on the challenges facing artists during the 1960s.
Followed by a book signing.
