This marks internationally acclaimed artist Chiharu Shiota’s first solo museum exhibition in New York City. Known for her monumental thread installations that transform gallery spaces into immersive environments, Shiota has created a newly commissioned, site-specific work that explores wartime memories and the duality of belonging to two home countries.

Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, the exhibition weaves together collective and personal narratives—examining themes of memory, loss, identity and mortality through Shiota’s signature installations. Discover how the artist transforms intangible emotions and experiences into tangible, breathtaking environments that envelop viewers in webs of meaning.

This special members tour offers behind-the-scenes insights into Shiota’s creative process, including exclusive access to documentation of her stage design for Japan Society’s theater commission KINKAKUJI (The Temple of the Golden Pavilion).
