Gallery After Hours: Curator’s Tour of Chiharu Shiota: Two Home Countries

Open to Sustaining+ members
Experience the powerful artistry of Chiharu Shiota at an exclusive reception and private tour for Japan Society members. Begin with premium sake, tea and light refreshments before joining Japan Society Gallery Senior Gallery Director Dr. Michele Bambling for an intimate guided exploration of this groundbreaking exhibition.
This marks internationally acclaimed artist Chiharu Shiota’s first solo museum exhibition in New York City. Known for her monumental thread installations that transform gallery spaces into immersive environments, Shiota has created a newly commissioned, site-specific work that explores wartime memories and the duality of belonging to two home countries.
Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, the exhibition weaves together collective and personal narratives—examining themes of memory, loss, identity and mortality through Shiota’s signature installations. Discover how the artist transforms intangible emotions and experiences into tangible, breathtaking environments that envelop viewers in webs of meaning.
This special members tour offers behind-the-scenes insights into Shiota’s creative process, including exclusive access to documentation of her stage design for Japan Society’s theater commission KINKAKUJI (The Temple of the Golden Pavilion).
RSVP required. This event is exclusively for Sustaining and above Japan Society Members.
Following this event, members are invited to join a free screening of Letters from Fukushima, followed by a Q&A with director Minami Iizuka.
