Fall Open House at Japan Society

Kick off an exciting Fall season at Japan Society with inaugural Open House events and activities! In celebration of the newly founded Midtown Cultural Alliance and the launch of Chiharu Shiota: Two Home Countries and the world premiere commission KINKAKUJI, Japan Society welcomes visitors to our landmark building, Japan House. Featuring free gallery admission on select days, Japanese trial language lessons and Japanese writing activities for kids and families, it’s a can’t miss time to visit and explore.


Participate in the Midtown Cultural Alliance Passport Stamp Rally to redeem a free gift! After collecting three stamps from participating organizations, MCA passport holders may redeem a free gift from any of the five MCA organizations up to a maximum of three gifts. Be among the first 20 to redeem at Japan Society and receive a limited edition Japan Society tote bag. After the first 20, enjoy a free ticket to select Japan Society film screenings with your redemption.

  • Saturday, September 13 – Free Gallery Admission to Chiharu Shiota: Two Home Countries from 12-6pm.

  • Saturday, September 13 – Family Bookmark-Making: Learn Japanese Characters and Make Your Own Bookmark! from 1-4pm.

    Come and join Japan Society’s Open House! Families and visitors of all ages are invited to learn Japanese hiragana characters and try their hand at writing them. Using your own writing and colorful Japanese paper, each visitor will create their own bookmark! This creative keepsake is not only a fun introduction to Japanese culture but also a meaningful reminder to carry into the school year ahead!

  • Friday, September 19 – Free Trial Japanese Lesson with registration. Class runs from 1-2pm. Register here.

  • Saturday, September 20 – Free Gallery Admission to Chiharu Shiota: Two Home Countries from 12-6pm.
