Speaker
Fumiko Hayashi
, Chairman & CEO, Daiei, Inc.

Presider
Satoru Murase
, Partner, Bingham McCutchen Murase

Fumiko Hayashi had close to 30 years of experience in automotive sales, including running the Japanese subsidiaries of Volkswagen and BMW, when she was tapped by the IRCJ and an Advantage Partners-led private equity consortium to head supermarket chain Daiei’s restructuring. At first skeptics questioned whether Ms. Hayashi’s sales experience would translate into effective leadership in the distribution and retail sectors.  Ms. Hayashi quickly silenced her critics by passionately adhering to her belief that any business will thrive as long as customer service is the top priority.  Ms. Hayashi will discuss the hardships she has faced during Daiei’s rebirth – the Industrial Revitalization Corporation of Japan (IRCJ) took over the company in December 2004 – and share strategies that have made this turnaround a success.
