John D. Hawke, Jr. is the 28th Comptroller of the Currency. His office charters, regulates and examines approximately 2,000 national banks and 51 federal branches of foreign banks in the United States, accounting for more than 56 percent of the nation’s banking assets. As Comptroller, Mr. Hawke is a member of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, which has recently completed work on a new international capital adequacy framework (“Basel II”). His remarks will focus on the challenges that the U.S. banking industry faces both nationally and internationally.
