1998, 87 min., 35mm, b&w. Written and directed by Shinya Tsukamoto. With Shinya Tsukamoto, Kirina Mano, and Tatsuya Nakamura. Print courtesy of The National Film Center, The National Museum of modern Art with permission from Gold View.

Director Shinya Tsukamoto plays Goda, the anguished middle-aged protagonist of this intimate portrait of aimless violence. Goda meets a punk girl who lures him into a back alley where her friends brutally attack and humiliate him. Her friends are simply bored middle-class kids looking for kicks. In his quest for revenge, Goda stumbles upon a gun and the stage is set for a bloody resolution. Beneath Tsukamoto’s stylized violence lies a disquieting warning about the desperation and alienation underlying Japanese life.
