Richard J. Samuels is Ford International Professor of Political Science at MIT and Chairman of the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission. Beginning with the founding of modern nation-states after the Meiji Restoration in Japan and the Risorgimento in Italy, Prof. Samuels traces the developmental dynamic in both countries and masterfully demonstrates that there are some fascinating political parallels to be made between Italy and Japan.

Followed by a reception and booksigning.
